• D2.1 Specification of the semantics-based content and meta-representation formalism
This deliverable specifies the semantics-based representation formalism for patent documents using an ontology and Semantic Web technologies framework. It contains an overview of various patent documents types and characteristics and a number of requirements for patent documents knowledge representation are derived. Existing Semantic Web languages and status is given and after investigating all available solutions, OWL-DL was selected as the language for knowledge representation in the PATExpert framework. OWL-DL fulfils both expressivity and retrieval requirements of patent documents within PATExpert. The developed knowledge representation consists of a number of interconnected ontology modules which represent the semantics of all patent documents aspects, covering the content, structure and metadata of patent documents and domain specific issues as well. Then integration of these modules using SUMO as the upper core ontology and a specifically developed for patents PULO mid-level ontology is also described. The deliverable contains an Annex with representative parts of the ontologies described.

The consortium is now writing a PATExpert book which will be published with IOS Press, Amsterdam.
