ESCITY publishes an Action Guide addressed to local and regional governments
ESCITY action guide contains best practices and recommendations to start up –or to further develop– local policies addressed to promote scientific culture at local level. It includes a collection of referenced cases of promotion of science culture that have been put into place in different European countries. It also includes a brief description of the local-regional-national context in which those cases have taken place, a summary, and a set of recommendations, as well as a brief description of the ESCITY project itself.

ESCITY in the 4th Conference on Social Communication of Science
ESCITY participated in the IV Congreso sobre Comunicación Social de la Ciencia held in Madrid on the 21-22-23 November. Vladimir de Semir, ESCITY Scientific Director, was invited to participate in the round table focusing on European projects on Science Culture and science dissemination. www.csciencia2007.csic.es
ESCITY seminar in Barcelona (25-26 October)
ESCITY seminar held in Barcelona was a step forward the creation of the future network. It gathered relevant actors in designing and implementing cultural policies across Europe. [+]
ESCITY presented in an official visit of the Institut des Hautes Études pour la Science et la Technologie (IHEST)
ESCITY was presented on April, 27 to a wide delegation of Research Centres Directors, country managers and French journalists in the frame of an official visit in Barcelona of the Institut des Hautes Études pour la Science et la Technologie (IHEST). The event was held in the Residence of the delegation in Catalonia of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). Several country representatives showed interest in participating in the next ESCITY meeting, to be held in October 2007 in Barcelona.
ESCITY presentation in Brussels (6th February)
The EC financed project “ESCITY-Europe Science and the City: Promoting Science Culture at Local Level”, whose main aim is to set the basis for a new European network of local and regional governments, as well as other institutions, involved in promoting science at local level was presented in the Catalunya Regional Office on the 6th of February. European Commissioner Janez Potocnik gives support to ESCITY in Magdeburg
ECSC: What can and will the European Union do for a better networking between European cities and for a better support of the cities with a view to their scientific efforts? Under which conditions?
Potocnik: At project level, a good example of work we do with cities is the ESCITY project, which started in March 2006. This is a first attempt to encourage networking among European actors in the area of scientific culture. It has started with 8 partners, including Magdeburg, host of the European Congress, but its aim is to widen its scope in time to create a permanent network for promoting science to the public. ESCITY invited in the European Congress of Science Cities (ECSC)
ESCITY participated in the European Congress of Science Cities (ECSC) held in Magdeburg (Germany) from 7th to 9th November 2006. Vladimir de Semir, Director of the ESCITY project, participated in the opening panel on the importance of science for the development of cities in the 21st century and in the workshop “Science as innovation impulse”. Johanna Cáceres also participated as member of the Constituent meeting of the editorial group “Declaration of Magdeburg”.
ESCITY travels to Korea
ESCITY was presented in the 9th International Conference on Public Communication of Science and Technology held in Seoul, Korea, from 17 to 20th June 2006. Gemma Revuelta, from the Science Communication Observatory (UPF) and the Culture Institute of Barcelona City Council, presented the paper entitled “ESCITY: the European Science and the City Network” in the session “Informed citizen”.
Quark magazine presents ESCITY
The Spanish science communication journal, Quark, Ciencia, Medicina, Comunicación y Cultura, included the article Science and city in Europe, in its issue 37-38, published in April 2006. Johanna Cáceres, co-director of the ESCITY project, is the author of the article.
City Science Communication International Forum in Shanghai
Vladimir de Semir presented his paper the “Science & the city strategy of Barcelona” where he developed again the idea of ESCITY, in the City Science Communication International Forum held in Shanghai, in November 2005. Professor Li Jianmin Director of the Shanghai Institute of Science of Sciences (SISS) presented also a paper “Study of Science Popularization in Modern Cities” developing also the idea of how science popularization can push the course of city modernization and develop people’s modern consciousness in the current situation [full paper].
The idea of ESCITY is born in the Science in Society Forum 2005

Vladimir de Semir, scientific Director of the ESCITY project, presented the idea of ESCITY for the first time during the Science in Society Forum 2005, held in Brussels. The Forum served as a platform to present in Europe the preliminary version of the idea of ESCITY (Science and the City). Full presentation.
